Elephant and Castle Urban Forest
The FLEE Collective are pleased to present the
Elephant and Castle Urban Forest
'Come and play in South London’s secret woodland’

An exhibition showcasing the hidden secrets of the Heygate Estate, capped by a guided tour of the forest at the end of the day. Elephant and Castle Urban Forest is London’s secret woodland. At its heart are 450 majestic trees, mostly London Plane, which for decades have been thriving hidden behind the towering slabs of the Heygate Estate in a part of London best known for concrete, cars and a big pink shopping centre. Glimpses of the woodland can be seen by outsiders along the bustling New Kent Road and on the northern corner of Walworth Road.

Today most of this mature forest is a sheltered and verdant semi-wilderness thriving in between the remains of the almost empty social housing estate. A few people know the secret and are having fun in there. Some residents remain and the evicted return to enjoy the green space. In clearings guerrilla gardeners have established new allotments and in the old playgrounds people still congregate. This forest has entered an exciting new phase of its life.

Earth Education Project

The Earth Education Project(EEP) sell wonderful paper products and cards that are created by hand from scrap paper, recycled also by hand by a group of women living in Nicaragua - on Central America's largest rubbish dump; La Chureca.
The EEP, also a charity - no.1141186, started in 2009 by working with a group of women who had previously supported their families by scavenging for rubbish to sell from the dump. EEP teaches these women the skills to recycle waste paper by hand and produce artesian paper and paper products. The women receive a fair wage in the form of a learning stipend. Together with them the EEP are building a community business. 100% of sales go directly back to the women that make the products.

Sophie Argles

EEP also works with UK artist Sophie Argles who donates her designs to the workshop for their Christmas card collection, Valentines Day and a limited edition occasion cards. Sophie also supports EEP with the artistic direction of workshops and creating art lesson plans for students in Nicaragua.
Sophie's work is influenced and inspired by fashion, make up and illustrations from the past and present, fairy tales, flora and fauna; "I often combine my work with the use of stitch and recycling, creating large collages.
